Curriculum Overview

The children at Ireleth St Peter’s CofE Primary School (ISP) are taught in mixed age classes. As with all village schools, pupil numbers tend to fluctuate yearly therefore class structure and long term curriculum planning is reviewed regularly. 

For 2020-2021, the school is currently organised into three classes.

Onside Sports deliver the majority of PE alongside our Sports and Wellbeing Lead, Miss Morrison.

English

Throughout every stage of our pupil's time at Ireleth St Peter's , teaching and learning in English aims to equip children with essential literacy knowledge and communication skills which allow them to unlock their full potential across all other areas learning and develop and articulate their understanding of the world around them. Throughout school, our  Christian values underpin every aspect of school life. In English, we use our values to encourage the children to be creative, explore diversity and nurture curiousity in order to support them to make progress and prepare children well for the future. 

We make use of well resourced classroom spaces, that reflect our values and our high standards, each classroom in school has an appealing and prominent reading area with high quality texts available, class books are shared daily and independent reading is celebrated. Additionally, we are fortunate to have extensive grounds, that allow us to utilise outdoor learning approaches across all classes.

All elements of the English curriculum are covered throughout the week. We follow a broad and balanced curriculum, that gives pupils the opportunity to study a range of non-fiction, fiction and poetry genres throughout the year, building on and devleoping their prior learning in these areas. Using a cross curricular approach, linked to termly class topics, the children study the features of high quality model texts and apply them to their own pieces of writing. Reading and writing objectives are taught through daily English sessions, using a range of teaching and learning strategies, which emphasise interactive and collaborative learning styles and provide children with frequent opportunities to produce independent work. Additionally, all children also take part in shorter, daily SPaG and phonics sessions. Where need for further support is identified, we provide additional learning interventions to equip all children with confidence, independence and ownership of their learning. 

Mathematics

Mathematics is an essential life skill and is therefore a vital part of the curriculum at Ireleth St Peters. Mathematics is required for everyday so lessons aim to build on life skills through a practical and varied response.

Mathematics provides a way of viewing and making sense of the world. It is used to communicate and analyse information and ideas to tackle a range of practical tasks and real life problems. We teach Maths through a daily lesson using a variety of teaching and learning strategies, one of which is ‘Big Maths’ which encourages the children to develop an excellent understanding of all aspects of number.

We follow a core curriculum format, returning to each topic with increasing depth and ensuring that every mathematical concept is introduced, reinforced, mastered, consolidated and extended through further investigation. We ensure all children experience appropriate practical and investigative problem solving activities, presented in both oral and written form. EYFS and KS1 are encouraged to develop outdoor skills for Maths and create real life opportunities for learning. We encourage children to learn number bonds and times tables and become confident in developing their own mental mathematics strategies, this is supported through online resources. Most of all we encourage children to enjoy Maths and learn to be confident, aspiring and creative mathematicians.


Science 

We live in an increasingly scientific and technological age where children need to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes to prepare them for life in the 21st century. We, at Ireleth St Peter's Primary School believe that the teaching of science develops in children an interest and curiosity about the world in which they live, and fosters in them a respect for the environment.
 
We aim that all pupils:
· Are introduced to the language and vocabulary of science
· Develop practical skills and their ability to make accurate and appropriate measurements
· Develop enjoyment and interest in science and an appreciation of its contribution to all aspects of everyday life
· Build on their curiosity and sense of awe of the natural world
· Use a planned range of investigations and practical activities to allow them a greater
· Understanding of the concepts and knowledge of science

Every year, we celebrate British Science Week by immersing ourselves in scientific investigations, experiments and opportunities to learn new skills. 

For 2021, we had to postpone our Science Week due to school closures but we celebrated it at the end of April instead!

Magic Milk!

For this experiment, we dropped food colouring onto a plate on milk. We then dipped a toothpick into washing up liquid and held it in the milk. Due to the different density of the milk, food colouring and washing up liquid, the food colouring spread out, creating beautiful tie dye patterns in the milk! 

 

Walking Water!


This experiment focused on osmosis, resulting in the mixing of colours from the cups with coloured water in to the cups with no water in them at all!


Pencils through a bag

The children were so excited to see that the water does not pour out of the bag. No water spills out of the holes because ziploc bags are made of a polymer. When you poke the sharp pencil into the plastic the pencil point slides in between the chain of molecules that make up the polymer. The molecule chains "hug" the pencil, making a seal around the pencil that won't let the water out.

Computing 

Computing is an integral part of day to day life for us all, we find that early exposure for all pupils in school helps develop their skills from an early age and provides the future generations with the necessary skills for adult life and employment within the ever-changing technological environment we live in. Although the programmes we teach now will not be those of the future, we work hard in preparing our children for the unknown digital world.

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. As well as the discrete Computing lessons, the children here at ISP receive, we ensure that technology is embedded throughout the curriculum.

We see E-Safety as a central focus of all Computing teaching and learning. E-safety is built in to all topics as well as us hosting regular E-Safety focus days and events.

We have many resources in school to develop children’s computer science, information technology and digital literacy skills. Currently, we utilise:

  • a set of tablets in our EYFS Classroom
  • a set of tablets and laptops in our KS1 Classroom
  • a set of laptops in our KS2 Classroom.
  • Interactive boards in every classroom.

PE & Sport

At Ireleth St Peters, we are attentive that a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

As well as the identified Physical Education lessons, we ensure that Physical Education is involved in the whole curriculum. We are fully equipped with prime equipment to enhance the children's Physical Education learning, outdoor play and wellbeing.
